What is Hollywood Superstar?

Hollywood Superstar Review writes against the current state of affairs in which we find ourselves where (arts) writers are being paid pennies to create portable stores of value, in a tone never too enthusiastic or too sceptical. Art writing serves to acknowledge the existence of an exhibition before being sequestered to a line in an artist's press packet

The Superstar's text should stand on her own two feet; critical where it is due, which is often. We want artists’ work to exist outside the now-booming echo chamber, where art writing is permittable only as a mechanical reproduction, both in form and content, issued via PDF.

The Superstar is transparent; the Superstar has no media training.

We like writing that is non-fungible; we want people who write for reasons beyond themselves.

Ergo: anonymity is the luxury of the Superstar. Please ask our editors if you think it’s right for you.

What do the categories mean?

Hollywood Superstar Review

350-550 word reviews of exhibitions and culture-at-large. Polemic encouraged. Likewise, internal disputation.

Artist Take

We invite people to discuss things they admire.

Blog

The modern blog evolved from the online diary, where people would keep a running account of their personal lives. Most such writers called themselves diarists, journalists, or journalers. Here, we just call it “Blogging”. A homage to early Tumblr text posts mixed with the plasticity of subcultural messaging.

Essay

Semi-academic polemical essays on fashion, art, politics, etc.

Film

Bi-weekly, curated film programming: every two weeks a new film, a new theme every so often. Submissions welcome. After the film has finished being shown, a couple frames will be recorded and a little paragraph too. Responses to the films or disagreements with the paragraphs should be made into Hollywood Reviews or essays.
